Igniting Passion for Healthcare Careers

High school students in Las Cruces New Mexico embarked on a journey into the world of medicine. Their CommunityShare project provided a glimpse into the diverse career paths and real-world environment of the healthcare field.

The 91 students hopped on Aggie transit to visit Burrel College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM). Beyond the typical tour, students had the chance to actively participate in workshops and gain hands-on experience using ultrasound machines on medical student volunteers. They learned about different pain management techniques and explored the demanding yet rewarding life of a medical student through a Q&A session with current college students.

BCOM medical students also visited the high school classroom on two occasions. Together, they conducted an enzyme lab and delved into the complexities of the nervous system using real-world case studies. This collaboration fostered a sense of connection and allowed high schoolers to see themselves potentially following in the footsteps of their peers.

  • "I had one student that never pictured herself smart enough or driven enough to want to go into the medical field until she heard the stats and the experiences of the Latina doctor that spoke to them. It gave her and other students a chance to see them in roles that they assumed were out of their league."
